Original Release Date: June 2, 2017. Label: Island Records. Bob Marley and The Wailers’ ninth album Exodus is receiving a new expanded edition in honor of the album’s 40th anniversary. Exodus was the album that found Marley and his messages of love and social activism reaching a larger international audience. Exiled to London after an assassination attempt, he and his band concocted a laid-back album that ruminated on religion, sex and politics while still keeping the infectious reggae rhythms to the fore. Tracks like “Jamming,” “Waiting in Vain,” “Three Little Birds” and the exuberant “One Love/People Get Ready” (featuring an interpretation of Curtis Mayfield’s classic protest song) remain staples of the reggae genre, with the latter often used to promote tourism in Marley’s birthplace of Jamaica. The album became Marley’s second U.S. Top 20 and first U.K. Top 10, going gold on both coasts, and was later named the greatest album of the century by TIME. The centerpiece of Exodus 40: The Movement Continues is a new “restatement” of the original reggae classic as overseen by Bob’s son, Ziggy Marley. Ziggy has dived deep into the Exodus sessions and constructed new versions of the 10 songs on the album with unused and unheard vocals, overdubs and session takes. This resequenced version of the album stand alongside a new remaster of the original on all packages. Deluxe versions of the set include a third disc of recordings taken from The Wailers’ four-day stand at London’s Rainbow Theatre from June 1-4, 1977, the week the album was released in stores. Of these eight recordings, only one was previously released on a 2001 expanded edition of the Exodus album.
