When Art Rupe of Specialty Records first heard the master tape of Sam Cooke's "You Send Me" in 1957, he declared that the track sounded "too white" for his label's R&B and gospel audience, and he passed on it, letting Cooke take the master tape out the door and over to Keen Records, who subsequently released it, and the rest, as they say, is history. Rupe was simply hoping Cooke would stick with the successful gospel sound he had been tracking since 1951 for Specialty as the lead singer of the legendary Soul Stirrers, a run that produced genre classics like "Jesus Gave Me Water," "Peace in the Valley," "The Last Mile of the Way," and the Cooke-composed "Touch the Hem of His Garment," all of which are included on this 14-song survey of the Soul Stirrers' Specialty Profiles. But Cooke wanted to sing secular material, as well, and he tested the water with "Lovable," originally released under the name Dale Cook. After "You Send Me" was a massive pop hit for Keen, Rupe dusted off another of Cooke's secular experiments, "I'll Come Running Back to You," overdubbed Rene Hall on guitar, and released it after the fact, watching it ride the coat tails of "You Send Me" up into the charts. Truth is, Cooke could sing anything, sacred or secular, and make it sound like pure soul, and there are many who feel that some of his finest vocals were done while he was with the Soul Stirrers. Indisputably among the premier gospel groups of the modern era, the Soul Stirrers pioneered the contemporary quartet sound. Pushing the music away from the traditional repertoire of jubilees and spirituals towards the visceral, deeply emotional hard gospel style so popular among postwar listeners, the group's innovative arrangements -- they were the first quartet to add a second lead -- and sexually charged presence irrevocably blurred the lines between religious and secular music while becoming a seminal influence on the development of rock & roll and soul, most notably by virtue of their connection to the legendary Sam Cooke… by Jason Ankeny

Sam Cook the greatest r&b singer of all time? Few would dispute that. Was he the most influential? Undoubtedly. And although Cooke never lived to see the eruption of soul music, it was founded on reverence for him. Later, there were rock and even reggae singers who openly based their style upon his, and many others who absorbed his influence at several removes. Even Cook’s trademark “whoa-oh-oh” has passed into the vernacular of popular music, although no one has quite managed to replicate it.
Sam Cooke could bear down on the hardest gospel song or glide effortlessly through a pop ballad. He could soar above a full orchestra or be almost embarrassingly intimate in front of a small group. He never seemed to overstretch or lose sight of his direction. He also wrote many of his own songs, produced many of his sessions, and later took control of the business of music. If he were alive today, he would only be in his seventies; as it is, he has been dead for more than 40 years.
