Drawing on his prodigious output for Pablo, 75th Birthday Celebration is a three-CD compilation which celebrates Oscar Peterson's 75th birthday in 2000. Disc one commemorates some of his many "friends" sessions, and his duets with trumpeters Roy Eldridge, Jon Faddis, Clark Terry and Harry Edison all impress. There are also two tracks featuring Count Basie and an exhilarating duo with vibist Milt Jackson. Disc Two samples Peterson's vast concert repertoire: inter alia there are three tracks from his 1955 sojourn at Zardi's with Herb Ellis and Ray Brown, two from his 1979 Copenhagen date with Stephane Grappelli and a pair of amazing performances in the company of harmonica genius Toots Thielemans the year after. Disc Three offers a selection from Peterson's annual Montreux Festival appearances between 1975 and 1981. Outstanding tracks here include "Teach Me Tonight" and "Soft Winds" in the company of both Brown and Niels-Henning Шrsted Pedersen and a roisterous "You Look Good To Me" that rounds off the whole collection. Peterson aficionados might quibble occasionally on a "why not that track instead of this?" basis, but those less steeped in the pianist's work will derive hours of pleasure from this medium-priced release.
