Various Artists "26 TURKISH DELIGHTS: ULTRARARITIES FROM BEYOND THE SEA OF MARMARA" (Grey Past Records, 2001) A killer collection of Turkish garage-psychedelia from the 1960s and '70s. Turkey had a long love affair with psych rock, running from the mid-'60s through the end of '70s, when government repression brought an abrupt end to a long period of liberalization. This disc gathers several dozen tracks from the masters of the style, including artists such as Erkin Koray, Cem Karaca and Baris Manco -- little known in English-speaking climes, but huge local heros in their day. This Turkish material is especially appealling to fans of foreign rock who tire of poorly-enunciated English-language cover tunes, as most of the songs are sung in Turkish (a language that has no linguistic connection to English) and many are crazy rock adaptations of traditional themes. This is a rock collection that really shows some local character... and is highly recommended! (It may be hard to find this disc online or in stores, so maybe you can try writing the label directly at: huiboki@wanadoo.nl) We are all quite excited about the cd release of Turkish Delights comp (though Byram's a bit irked 'cause he bought the original vinyl and now is faced with a cd version that adds 11 extra tracks!). In total, there's 26 tracks here, dating from 1965 to 1971, of some of the best garage psych that we've ever heard -- from Turkey or anywhere else for that matter. The Turkish rock scene appears to have begun in earnest in 1956 when the English instrumental group The Shadows made their impression on Turkish teens. Given that many people in Turkey didn't even speak English, it's pretty impressive how well they assimilated a completely foreign music and excelled in it better than most of their American and British counterparts. Some of the tracks like Mavi Isiklar's "Great Airplane Strike of 1967" (a Paul Revere & the Raiders cover) are spitting images of garage-psych from the occident, but others like Cem Karaca & Apaslar's "Suya Giden Alli Gelin" are unmistakably Eastern. It's these tracks, that combine the rock n' roll structure and instrumentation augmented with Turkish instruments, scales and singing that really kick ass. Those of you that have already picked up the excellent "Hava Narghile" compilation know what we mean, but what was great about that collection is exponentially better on this one! Get it. "Digital issue of the previous Grey Past LP, 10 CD-only bonus tracks to speak of; two Erkin Koray jams ('Cicek Dagi', active eastern guitar instrumental with group-grunt, and 'Sana Bir Seyler Olmug', Turkish for 'Land of a Thousand Dances' apparently, tasty drum breaks, dissonant organ, then pop), and one extra each from Mogollar ('Eastern Love', a loose enough west-coast inspired runthrough...with English vocals), Cahit Oben ('Makaram Sari Baglar', a fairly spacey/distant rave-up, not dissimilar in aesthetic to the whole group-sounds explosion in Japan), Apaslar ('Sans Cocugu', groovy instrumental film-musik jam, mild-hot eastern guitar freakouts), Mavi's Isikar ('Ask Cicegi', good fuzz tone, active bass, wormhole causing haze in spots) and Cocuklar ('Tamzara', descending figure, countering guitar line, snaky, Ventures-ish), Haramiler ('Camlica Yolunda', tubby surf 'choon in nine, saxophone), Cem Karaca & Apaslar ('Anadolu Oyun Havasi' charged straight beat-esque harmonic minor whatnot), and Yabancilar ('Agit , a great low-light space-study, perfect cap). Original LP tracks are fairly wide-reaching stylistically, some real gems, some duff examples. Completists shed a lonely tear in the CD age, newbies take flight in the gap. Exotic, in the old world sense." -- Hrvatski Artist.........: VA Album..........: 26 Turkish Beat Psyche & Garage Delights Year...........: 2001 Bitrate........: 224 kbps Size...........: 74 mb Tracklist......: 1.
