Remain formal, until cued otherwise. Use titles and last names unless invited to do otherwise.
Greet a Russian with a firm handshake and state your name (polite phrases like "Nice to meet you" are welcome, "How are you?" is not necessary). When arriving at a home or event, always wait to be introduced. Do not introduce yourself (unless it is a very large party), or ask to be taken around to see the rest of the home or to meet others. When you first enter, it is appropriate to thank your hostess for their invitation. Once a relationship has been well established, men may greet each other with a bear hug; women with much emotional expression. Women might take each other's arm and walk down the street together; it is a sign of good friendship. There may be some introductory chitchat in social conversations, although Russians usually move to substance rather quickly. If you make invitations, be prepared to carry them out. If you are invited, be prepared to accept and go. In general, real relationships for the Russians are very demanding and intense. Although you should always be punctual, expect to wait; time is not as precise in Russia, although that is changing. Respect personal space - do not move items, furniture, or seek to physically become closer. Do not expect close relationships to develop merely because of proximity or neighborliness, especially in the cities. However, Russians do not queue up for buses, etc. In public, there can be much pushing and jostling. They do not yield when you say, "excuse me"; they are determined to be served and to be taken seriously once they have made decisions, but also expect that they will be ignored, which is always why there seems to be such "insistence" to what they say and do. Pay attention to when shops are open and closed. The hours can vary and the definition of "customer service" may begin and end with an efficient fulfillment of your request.! The word nyekulturny, (which literally means "not cultural") is a term applied by Russians to both themselves and foreigners when a behavior is deemed as uncultured or the wrong way to do something. For example, behaviors that are nyekulturny would be wearing your coat when entering a public building or sitting on your coat at the theater or a restaurant. The coat should be left in the cloakroom. Speaking and laughing loudly in a public place and whistling indoors is also considered nyekulturny. |
