Artist.........: Altan
Album..........: The Widening Gyre
Year...........: 2015
Bitrate........: 320 kbps
Size...........: 127 mb
Comment........:
Release Date: February 24, 2015. Label: Compass Records. Total Length: 58:59. With a career at the pinnacle of Irish music for nearly 35 years Altan has achieved legendary status in a genre that has been equally shaped by the band's influence and genius. On The Widening Gyre, the band explores the musical relationship between American roots music and the traditional music of Ireland. It s the first full project Altan has recorded in Nashville, and working under the guiding hand of producer and Compass co-founder Garry West, the album pairs these Irish masters with some of the leading lights of American folk and bluegrass music, many of whom the members of Altan have known for years. The resulting music is completely engaging, simultaneously breaking new ground and reminding listeners of the ancient bond between Irish and Appalachian music.
Stand out tracks include White Birds featuring Mary Chapin Carpenter on a lush, meditative reimagining of the W.B. Yeats poem about being a bird on the sea, an appropriate metaphor for a band who has musically and physically crossed the Atlantic in the making of the album. Eddi Reader, an amazing singer and very generous person, says founding member Mairéad Ni Mhaonaigh, offers her angelic backing vocals to Far Beyond Carrickfinn. Altan borrowed the mournful waltz No Ash Will Burn from the legendary Nashville songwriter Walt Aldridge. Mairead's crystalline vocals unlock the Celtic undertones of the song and contrast the plaintive baritone of Bruce Molsky, a longstanding friend of Altan and an old-time fiddler and singer of great renown. The bluegrass presence shows itself on Buffalo Gals and Thomasino (Thomas Tourish's Tune), a lively fiddle song written by Altan's own Ciaran Tourish which features bluegrass giants Darol Anger, Alison Brown, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Todd Phillips and Bryan Sutton. Tim O'Brien provides a duet vocal on The House Carpenter (Gypsy Davy), a track which spotlights the shared musical roots of Irish and Appalachian music with references to both of these historical songs.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Widening_Gyre_(album) https://compassrecords.com/album.php?id=1072 http://www.popmatters.com/review/191...widening-gyre/

Album..........: The Gap Of Dreams
Year...........: 2018
Bitrate........: 320 kbps
Size...........: 136 mb
Comment........:
Release Date: March 2, 2018. Label: Compass Records. Copyright: ℗© 2018 Altan. Issued under license to Compass Records. Total Length: 58:49. After thirty years of playing on stages all over the world from Dublin to New York, Tokyo to Sydney, the premier traditional Irish band, Altan came back to the hills of Donegal to record their new album, THE GAP OF DREAMS. The 13 tracks transport the listener to the lifestyle of rural Donegal, to a time before electricity when folks would gather together in the mists of winter to tell stories, sing songs and dance into the wee hours of the night. The music lifted the locals' spirits and helped elevate them beyond the hardships of the day like famine, conflict, and emigration. It is this spirit that informed the development of the band through their many phases of growth from a duo performing in pubs to international touring and recording artists. The album title, THE GAP OF DREAMS, is borrowed from a poem by Francis Carlin, The Ballad of Douglas Bridge, in which he writes: "The Gap of Dreams is never shut," referring to the gap between this world and the Otherworld. The Otherworld has always exerted a large influence on the fiddling tradition of County Donegal and has served as inspiration for song, music, and folklore. The album features many sets of traditional Donegal reels, such as Néilidh Boyle's provocative composition, "Seán sa Cheo" (John in the Mist), as well as original compositions. Martin Tourish wrote two lively reels in the Donegal style: "Tuar," which translates to "omen or sign," and "Oíche Fheidhmuúil," meaning "a spirited night." https://www.irishtimes.com/culture/m...olve-1.3415790 http://www.ampeddistribution.com/201...-gap-of-dreams

Release Date: March 1, 2024. Label: Compass Records. Total Length: 38:36. For the past 35 years, Altan have been bringing the music of their native County Donegal to the world stage. Irish-language songs and dynamic twin-fiddling, the hallmarks of Altan's sound, framework the band's newest album, aptly titled 'Donegal'. The album's 10 tracks pay homage to Donegal's rich musical heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture. The authenticity and allure of the music transports listeners to a bygone time in rural Ireland while simultaneously forging a connection between the past and modern times.
