Shooter Jennings's 2005 debut, Put the "O" Back in Country, outlined the artistic differences--and similarities--between himself and his parents, Waylon Jennings and Jessi Colter. This second time out, his tight, raw trio bristling behind him, his vocal roar remains less weathered, though he deliberately, momentarily evokes Waylon on "Some Rowdy Women," the darkly futile "Hair of the Dog," and "Little White Lines," a fearful, foreboding tale of cocaine abuse. His reflective, vulnerable side emerges on the sorrowful "The Song Is Slipping Away" and the painfully contrite ballad "Aviators." Sly humor drives a revival of Hank Williams Jr.'s "Living Proof" that begins by paying homage to the original, luring the listener into momentarily believing that Jennings, too, is desperate to free himself from a famous daddy's shadow. It is, of course, a brilliant fake-out. Near the song's end, he and the band flip right into the famous instrumental vamp Waylon used on so many of his hits, a wise-assed move worthy of Waylon himself. --Rich Kienzle

It is his rebel DNA accompanied with his mature outlook and emotional strength of a father and a family man, which makes him one of the most exciting artists of his era. This album was really the first time that I took the creative process entirely in my own hands. I had formed a new band, The Triple Crown, after reuniting with an old friend Erik Deutsch, who plays keys in the band, and went into the studio, producing the album myself. We spent a month in the Magic Shop in Soho and came out with what I think is my most country record to date. I'm really proud of this record and the songs on it, as this was the first time that I wrote the entire record on an acoustic, made demos, and treated the songs as a blue print for The Triple Crown to interpret. says Jennings
The first single from the album The Deed and The Dollar was released on iTunes on December 20th, 2011 and is considered by Shooter to be the perfect love song. Waylon Albright Jennings was named after his famous father, the country star to whom labels such as “maverick” and “outlaw” were liberally stuck like Post-it notes on a Nashville dive bar’s fridge. Shooter’s 33 now, the old man’s been dead for a decade and, on his seventh album, Jennings Jr raises the occasional shot glass to the family name (The Low Road, Mama It’s Just My Medicine), but for the most part he treads his own path.
