Run-D.M.C. (or Run DMC) was a major pioneering hip hop group, founded by Joseph "DJ Run" Simmons, Darryl "D.M.C." McDaniels, and Jason "Jam-Master Jay" Mizell. The group had an enormous impact on the development of hip hop through the 1980s and is credited with breaking hip hop into mainstream music. The three members of Run-D.M.C. grew up in the neighborhood of Hollis in the New York City borough of Queens, USA.

"Run" Simmons is the brother of hip-hop legend Russell "Rush" Simmons, and entered the hip-hop scene by DJing for his brother's first big act, Kurtis Blow. He shared his experiences on stage with Darryl McDaniels, one of his best childhood friends. The pair began performing at an underage club in Hollis, and remained in contact as they went off to college - Run to LaGuardia Community College and Darryl to St. John's University. They soon brought in a third member, Jam Master Jay, and in 1983 released their first single, "It's Like That".

The group soon found its way onto MTV. They became the first rap act to have a music video played on MTV and their self-titled debut album was the first rap album to go gold. They had the first rap album to go to number one on the R&B charts, as well as the first to break into the top ten charts for pop albums.

Lateef and the Chief are a side project of Quannum Projects crew members Lateef and Chief Xcel. Originally promoted as The Maroons, the duo formally switched their name to Lateef and the Chief sometime prior to the release of their debut album Maroons: Ambush.

Often thought of as the "Godfather of Crunk", Pablo is an associate of record producer Timbaland, who had hoped to sign the rapper to his Beat Club label, but by the time he was ready to begin negotiations, Pablo had already signed with Jive Records. He made his first professional recordings in 2001: a number of album tracks for the second Timbaland & Magoo album Indecent Proposal, which was delayed for release by Blackground Records until late 2001, after Pablo had already become a success on his own.

Pablo's first solo single was the Timbaland-produced "Raise Up", notable for its 'black' rhythm track and Pablo's frantic verses. A follow-up single, "I", featured a guest rap from Timbaland, and was a less urban sound. These two singles were included on Pablo's first album, Diary Of A Sinner: 1st Entry, released by Jive in 2001. The following year, he appeared on the song "Club Banger" from the Drumline soundtrack.

In 2004, Pablo released his second album, Still Writing In My Diary: 2nd Entry, which included the Lil Jon-produced hit single "Freek-a-Leek". He was also featured on Ciara's #1 single, "Goodies".

In 2005 Pablo signed to Death Row Records. His new album Proper Procedures was expected to be released in 2007.

Zion I (pronounced "Zion Eye") is a hip hop duo from Oakland, California. The duo consists of producer and DJ Amp Live and emcee Zion. The two are highly respected and acclaimed underground artists, famous for Amp's futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and Zion's poetic, positive and socially conscious lyrics. Zion I debuted in 1997 with the locally distributed cassette only EP Enter the Woods. Their first single on Indie label Ground Control Records ("Inner Light") paved way for an album deal and in 2000, they released the critically acclaimed Mind Over Matter. Very few hip-hop groups make it to their fourth full-length recording, and perhaps only the Roots have made it to that level while still ascending. Although lyrical and musical vision is sorely lacking from most hip-hop (as Puff and Master P have proved, vision isn't necessary to bum-rush the mainstream goldmine), such qualities are cornerstones of the Roots' music. Their second recording, 1995's Do You Want More?!!!??!, and its follow-up, 1996's Illadelph Halflife, intelligently linked hip-hop to its musical forebears funk and jazz, and their lyrics provided unique, postnationalist hip-hop critiques. On Things Fall Apart (named for the Chinua Achebe novel) the sextet takes on a more somber tone, but at no cost to their musical innovations. "If we had to depend on black people to eat, we'd starve to death," says Denzel Washington, sampled from Mo' Better Blues, at the outset of the recording. It's not self-pity--rather, the group frequently returns to the theme of how many African Americans confuse uniformity with unity. Musically, the group is at its best with guests like Mos Def and Talib Kweli from Black Star contributing some old-school fun and technique to "Double Trouble." Erykah Badu's supple vocals on "You Got Me" are offset by innovative percussion, including an organically developed jungle beat. At a point when most rappers are running on fumes, the Roots are synthesizing new ideas.
