1997 - Smells Like Surf Spirit
Label: GeeDee Records
*(Reviewes from Surf Instrumental Stereo)
Not just a cool title for a comp, but a fine collection of material mostly from the impressive Dee Gee catalog. Some rare, some demo, some live, some just plain solid surf. Recommended without hesitation.

1. THE BAMBI MOLESTERS "Point Break"
Light damped double picked rhythm guitar, slow shimmery lead, and an infectious rhythm. The whole thing is very distant and mysterious. Quite a bitchin' track! I find this sort of tune to be particularly endearing when well done, and a drag when not. The Bambi Molesters know how to do it!
2. HUSKY AND THE SANDMEN "Moonwaves"
"Moonwaves" is swimming in reverb, with a sway and a fine riff-based melody. It is a friendly sorta track, with a familiarity about it, and a happiness as well. The guitar lead is hot and flies through the verses with double picked notes machine-gunning out of the amp like there's no tomorrow, while the organ whirls. The sound is a bit ambient here, but this band is and has been a vital performer, and their energy and precision overcomes the sound lacking. This track was the A-side of their Gas Records single.
3. THE SLACKMATES "Saturation"
Right down to the woo-woos way low in the mix... really period label space surf with a modern cleanness. Like the sort of thing Laika & the Cosmonauts might choose to cover if it were 30 years old. The spoken guitar lessen intro is almost funny, if you don't own any of the Play Guitar With The Ventures albums.
4. LOS MEL-TONES "Kung Fu Saturdays"
A melodic and well spiced tune, with delightful glissandoes. Double picked, fluid, and punchy. The guys shout in the background too. Infectious, powerful, and hot fun.
5. SUSAN AND THE SURFTONES "Baja"
Susan and the SurfTones are an east coast surf band with one foot on the Ventures and the other on their longboard. Susan Yasinski is a solid writer and player, and her trio provide a tuff foundation for her guitar. "Baja" features a low down and gritty approach with a tuff and punchy sound. A nice departure from the usual cover of the Astronauts, without straying too far from Boulder.
6. THE LOONEY TUNES "Banzai Washout" (live)
Muddy sound, but mighty hot playing. Germany's Looney Tunes deliver the goods on this Steve Douglas tune. They rip through glissandoes and pound the audience. This tune is mighty strong anyway, and the lads do a fine job here.
7. THE BAMBI MOLESTERS "Wanganui"
"Wanganui" is an amazingly cool Orange County influenced number with great twang and a tad of jangle, a low-E lead line, surfy damped notes, cool drums, and a chunky sound. As with all of their work, it has a strong melody, and rates 100 on the infectiometer!
8. THE BOSS MARTIANS "The Mashed Potato Martian"
Spud theme instrumentalization from Seattle's oldest active surf combo. The tune is a northwest kinda variation on the trite hit-factory ethic. I don't care for this much. It's not fluid, but is choppy and uninteresting. It's a lot like the Joey Dee & the Starlighters material of the early sixties, without their charm and edge.
9. SUSAN AND THE SURFTONES "Walk, Don't Run / Jezebel" (live)
Susan and the Surf Tones deliver a traditional rendition of "Walk, Don't Run" energized by the insertion of Frankie Lane's "Jezebel," but not at all arranged like the Illusions. This is a perfect counterpoint to the Johnny Smith classic. Given the basic arrangement, I'm even more impressed that Susan Yasinski and company can bring fresh life to old tunes without completely reinventing them. Nice work.
10. HUSKY AND THE SANDMEN "Unreachable"
Husky & the Sandmen create some nice instro work. Here, they have created a slightly melodic track that has an eerie air about it, and a trad feel without being old school. Infectious and enjoyable.
11. THE PENETRATORS "Lamento A Go-Go"
"Lamento A Go-Go" is a slightly sad whammied tune with a very cool melody with twinges of spaghetti western or antipasti surf. This is a slightly sad number with a suave almost movie theme quality to it. Very melodic and engaging.
12. I COSMONAUTI "Sea Storm"
Italy's I Cosmonauti have created a really cool and moody number here, with a mysterious air and a trad sound. The damped second guitar is spot-on, and the melody is strong and infectious. This is solid driving surf, with touches of "Run Away" drama and the sounds of the surf. This is the sort of thing Jon & the Nightriders might do, though not as well recorded. Solid surf!
13. THE SURF RAIDERS "Suicide Point"
The Surf Raiders were among the earliest of the southern California surf revival bands of the early eighties. "Suicide Point" is a fairly early track, sullen and moody, but not among their best. Bob Dalley and Loyd Davis have always had a knack for writing trad surf melodies, and this serves them well. It's infectious and thumping good fun.
14. THE SWYNG JACKS "Killer Hot Dog"
A grodie "Pipeline"-esq backtrack, under a lesser melody with ample ominous tone, only the low-fi sound drag it down. Interesting and well written. This band (solo recording project) became the Looney Tunes later on. Nice to see this vault material coming out.
15. I COSMONAUTI "[Death Of A] Matador"
Very cool double picked original with a fiery delivery. It's a bit of a tango and is blessed with twinges of "Malaguena." A very nice low-E pounder - intense and powerful. I like it better here than alone on comps, where it has appeared before. It has plenty of solid energy.
16. CORKY CARROLL "Burning Sands"
This is one of Corky's few instrumentals, and one of his few non-country songs. It has a Middle-Eastern mystique with Hawaiian lap steel. All very soft and moody. The foreign intrigue of it suggests it's potential use in a film soundtrack. It's really quite beautiful.
17. THE CHANTAYS "Dances With Waves"
Great title! Vibrato and tom-toms and glissandoes and a near shimmer characterize the sound of this track. It seems almost melody free, mostly a riff. The break is weak, compared to the rest of the tracks.
18. THE IMPACTS "Pismo Nights"
One of the coolest little towns on the West Coast, Pismo Beach was the playground for the Central Coast surf bands. This tribute track is an ominous R&B growler, with evil sax, a dark progression, and cool soulin' sounds. The Rumblers' "Boss" inspired the backtrack.
19. THE SURF RAIDERS "Surf Raider"
This track is notable as much for the incorrectly set compressor breathing as the tune. The effect adds to the charm. The tune itself is infectious enough, and is among the better Surf Raiders tracks. It is melodic, very trad, and dynamic.
20. LOS MEL-TONES "Beyond The Stars"
A great melody and cool coldness hints of the vacuum of space. It has a bit of a middle eastern feel, and a hint of Dick Dale. The low-E / high-E interplay is really cool. Great track.
