British saxophonist James Vargas keeps things mellow and funky on his self-titled debut album. Calling to mind such smooth jazz luminaries as Walter Beasley and Steve Cole, Vargas has a lithe improvisational style and supple tone well suited to the instrumental R&B represented here. Keyboardist Oli Silk, who Vargas previously worked with in Sugar & Silk, shares many of the writing/performing credits and adds a lush Euro-funk vibe. Similarly engaging is Yvonne John Lewis, whose soulful vocals help carry the heartfelt ballad "Say You Will."
