The selection also features three obscure cuts from Junior Soul, who would later score a hit with Police & Thieves as Junior Murvin. Derrick Harriott is one of the forerunners in Jamaican music and started his career as a singer in the late 50s and would soon find fame as part of the Jiving Juniors. Later he turned to production and his recordings have always been crisp and elegant. Derrick Harriott - Reggae, Funk & Soul 1969-1975And a fresh set from Japan’s Dub Store Records spotlights these influences again. On Reggae, Funk & Soul 1969-1975 20 gems produced by singer-turned-producer Derrick Harriott are highlighted. It’s a tasty mix of originals and cover versions, both instrumental and vocal cuts played and sung by some of Jamaica’s finest talents, including I Roy, Karl Bryan, Junior Murvin as well as Derrick Harriott himself along with his house band The Crystalites. Derrick Harriott interprets both the music of American black consciousness as well as romance and affairs of the hearts. There’s also room for a few novelty tunes inspired by spaghetti westerns and composers like Sergio Leone. By the mid-1970s, Derrick Harriott was already a veteran of the Jamaican music scene, having launched his singing career some two decades earlier. During the rock steady era, his productions included a score of hits, with his work widely regarded as being among the most accomplished of the era. His hit rate continued unabated into the Seventies and by the time Trojan Records released his "Greatest Hits" album in 1975, Harriott was firmly established as one of reggae music's premier hit makers. The best-selling collection was to have a profound influence on the developing sound of lovers rock, yet despite it's popularity and significance, has remained unavailable on CD - until now. CD1 of this deluxe expanded version of the LP includes dub versions of nine of the album's dozen tracks, while the second disc showcases Harriott's follow-up long-player, "Reggae Disco Rockers", the original UK release of which was pulled due to Trojan's abrupt demise in '75.
